Annie Powe Hopper Award

Scope and Contents The Annie Powe Hopper Award, named in honor of Valdosta State's first Dean of Women, is presented annually to a senior who represents the high academic standards and exemplifies the traditions of Valdosta State University. Annie Sue Metzger (Brandon) Collection

This collection contains artwork produced by Annie Sue (Brandon) Metzger in 1932-1933. They are paintings, sketches, and drawings of Georgia State Womans College (GSWC). Included are Ashley, Converse, and West Hall, as well as other sites such as the GSWC kitchen and boiler building.

This collection houses memorabilia items from South Georgia State Normal College, Georgia State Womans College, the early days of Valdosta State College, and Valdosta State University It contains sheet music from SGSNC and GSWC as well as awards given to GSWC. It also has items labeled Valdosta State College such as pencils, stickers, buttons, and postcards.Contains VSU decorative ribbon from 2021.

F. Ruth Carpenter

Scope and Contents

Frances Ruth Carpenter was the first art teacher at South Georgia State Normal College, and she taught at the school until her retirement in 1949. She represented the start of what would later develop into the Fine Arts Department. These are three paintings done by her.

Scope and Contents This collection contains public relations booklets from Georgia State Woman's College. Called Views of the College in the 1920s, Campus Glimpses in the '30s, and the Bulletin in the '40s, these informational booklets show 20 years of growth and change at Georgia State Woman's College. Originally used as promotional materials, these picture booklets show the changing campus, clothing styles, and general everyday life of a Girl's college in the early 20th Century. Gulliver/Rentz Collection

Scope and Contents Augusta Rentz Gulliver was an alumnus of Georgia State Womans College and went on to become its Registrar in 1931. This is where she met Harold Gulliver. Harold was the head of the English department and a professor of English literature at GSWC. They were married in the rotunda of West Hall in the early 1930s. This collection is made up of items found in an old steamer trunk belonging to the Gullivers. It is full of correspondence, along with photographs and newspaper clippings....

Jere M. Pound Papers

Abstract Dr. Jere (pronounced "Jerry") Madison Pound was the second president of Georgia State Womans College. He was appointed in July 1933 by the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia, and served only until May 1934, due to illness.  Dr. Pound was born in Liberty Hill, Georgia, in 1864.  He received an A.B. from the University of Georgia in 1884 and an honorary LL.D. from the University of Georgia in 1915.  He married Ada Murphey in 1890, and they had five sons:  Murphey, Jere...

Lena Hawks Instructional Reports

Lena Hawks was Dean of Instruction for Georgia State Woman's College in the late 1930s-1940s. This is a collection of statistical data compiled by her in that time period concerning the students of GSWC. May Day Festival

Scope and Contents May Day was a tradition that had been on campus since the school's inception in 1913. It lasted until the 1956, ending after Georgia State Womans College became Co-ed. There was a break in the mid-1940's caused by wartime austerity.  Modeled after the Old English May Day festival, every year featured a different theme, and a new May Queen and Court.
