Biographical Note

Founded in 1967, The Lowndes County Historical Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting and preserving the rich history of Valdosta and Lowndes County, Georgia. The society operates the Lowndes County Historical Museum. We are located at 305 W. Central Avenue in downtown Valdosta in the historic former Carnegie Library. Our museum provides almost 10,000 square feet of local history displays and research material. The museum grounds also include multiple outdoor exhibits. Over 6,000 individuals, including 2,000 school children, visit the Museum each year. With meeting and guest speaker facilities on site, we host a wide array of gatherings, presentations and activities.

Scope and Contents Dr. William Montgomery Gabard (1922-2006) was a member of the faculty at Valdosta State University for 40 years, from 1948-1988. During this time he served as a professor and head of the history department and the founding Director of International Studies. He was a founding member of the board of directors of the Southern Center for International Studies and The Japan-America Society in Georgia.
