Biographical Note

Founded in 1967, The Lowndes County Historical Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting and preserving the rich history of Valdosta and Lowndes County, Georgia. The society operates the Lowndes County Historical Museum. We are located at 305 W. Central Avenue in downtown Valdosta in the historic former Carnegie Library. Our museum provides almost 10,000 square feet of local history displays and research material. The museum grounds also include multiple outdoor exhibits. Over 6,000 individuals, including 2,000 school children, visit the Museum each year. With meeting and guest speaker facilities on site, we host a wide array of gatherings, presentations and activities.

Scope and Contents South Georgia State Normal College was founded in 1906 as a teacher's college. It became a four year institution in 1922 and was rebranded Georgia State Woman's College, a name that it kept until it became co-educational in 1950  transforming into Valdosta State College. In 1993 Valdosta State achieved Univesity status, and in 2006 it celebrated it's hundredth year anniversary.
