Jimmy Rae Dixon, or James Dixon, along with his wife Jo were owners of metaphysical shop, the Witching Well in Dallas, Texas, from around 1973 to 1977. With a move to Aurora, Colorado, in 1977 Castle Rising was established. Doing business as J & J Enterprises, the metaphysical store issued a newsletter by Castle Rising as well as various publications and catalogs. They soon outgrew the Aurora location and located a suitable spot in neighboring Dallas and moved in September 1978. Castle Rising is also the publisher of A Pagan Renaissance journal of witchcraft that began in 1979.

The Dixons and Castle Rising would move to West Virginia as early as 1982
