Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

John Randall Walker(February 23, 1874 – July 21, 1942) was a U.S. political figure from the state of Georgia. In 1912, Walker was elected to the 63rd United States Congress as a Democratic member of the United States House of Representatives and served two additional terms in that seat until losing his bid for reelection in 1918. [He seems to have lived in Valdosta, Georgia, during some of the time he was in Congress] The Collection consists of one archival box (5" deep) of correspondence from 1913-1917. The bulk of the correspondence is 1915-1916.  Most of it discusses bills that are up before Congress or bills coming to Congress, as this relates to his constituents and his district. The original collection was heavily mold damaged, so we had to do preservation copying. Some of it is still illegible, but most is readable. According to Wikipedia, Walker's career as a representative ran through the 63rd and 64th congress, from 1913-1918, so these are probably most of his papers, at least his constituent correspondence anyway.  Some of the letters were so mold damaged that they had to be discarded uncopied.  However, most of the mold damaged pages were copied, and all retained originals have been encapsulated.
