Item 64: Richard Wright Autograph, 1940-03-13

 Item — Item: 64
Collection number: 64

Scope and Contents

Signed note written to Henry G. Ashley, a collegue from the Federal Writer's Project of the 1930's. the note states, "in memory of those now-to-be-forgotten days when Uncle Sam paid us to write." Wright's tone in the letter is bitter and ironic: by lamenting the disappearance of former days when writers were actually appreciated by the fedeal government, it only underscored how that attitude had changed for the worse. Similar disenchantment with American society explained Wright's later defection to Europe (from attached description).

Note is flanked by covers of the books "Black Boy" and Native Son".
