Box 1: Pascagoula River Tribe
Scope and Contents
The Pascagoula River Tribe Collection is a collection created by Valdosta State University History professor Dixie Ray Haggard. These documents are related to the ongoing legal proceedings of the Pascagoula River Tribe in Mississippi who are trying to gain federal tribal recognition. The collection consists of physical and digital components, which include historical documentation, interview transcripts, letters, genealogical research, and photographs.
This collection is confidential without Dr. Haggard's explicit permission, as it consists of genealogical evidence used to prove they are in fact a tribe. Dr. Haggard is using these documents to show the laborious, bureaucratic nightmare that is tribal recognition and that such historical documents are still very relevant.
