- A New Court House- In response to a suggestion made by the Judge in his charge to the grand jury that body investigated the matter of the need of a new court house, and in their general presentiments recommended that the county commissioners sell the west half of the court house lot , and perhaps the northeast corner, if necessary, and levy a special tax this year and next year of ten cents on the hundred dollars, and with funds thus raised, build a new court house, on the southeast corner of the said lot. It was believed that this plan will raise about 20,000 dollars with which a handsome and commodious house can be erected in a little over one year. There is a crying need for this new building. There are only four rooms in the basement of the present building to accommodate nine or ten county officials who ought to have offices of their own. The clerk's and the ordinary's offices are too small and cramped, and, [illegible] afford ordinary comfort and ease for those who are detained there by business. The tax receiver has no office, the tax collector has no office, the county commissioners has no office, the county school commissioner has no office, the sheriff has no office, and the grand jury room is small and cramped and uncomfortable. It has but three windows to afford ventilation in hot weather for 24 men, often detained in it for six or eight days at a time. The writers had a taste of it this week. VT 1890-05-31

ABout ten thousand dollars were subscribed to the stock of the concern. There is more talk of enlarging the Institute building. Work is progressing on the ice factory, that is the search for water. As soon as the city bonds are placed the work will progress rapidly on the City Hall. Mr. J.G. Stevens has made some additions to his residence. Mr. A.T. Reid is building a handsome two-story residence out on the Hill. VT 1890-06-21
