Scope and Contents
The men’s Basketball Team, first the Rebels and then the Blazers after 1972, was formed and played its first season in 1959 with coach Gary Colson (see Baseball 16/2/2). In 1968, coach Jimmy Melvin took over and in 1971 James Dominey, current Blazer’s coach, got the job. The Men’s Basketball Collection contains, schedules, promotional materials, annual programs, clippings and correspondence. The summer basketball camp is also documented.

Valdosta State, which finished third in the Gulf South Conference last year, is a true case of “You can’t tell the players without a pro- gram’’ this year as only three of last year’s ten players return. Coach James Dominey faces the chore of replacing two All-GSC players in the likes of Lavell Garror and Mike Phillips who graduated, but last year’s Freshman of the Year in the GSC, Butch Shelman, is back to lead a team that finished at 19-9 (10-6 in the GSC).
