Time Capsule

Scope and Contents

Pictures and copies of some items that went into the time capsule at Drexel Park in Valdosta to be opened in 2060. Many of these items relate to Moody Airforce base. The VSU Archivist oversaw the packing of the Time Capsule, and there is a copy of the Valdosta Daily Times for the date in 2010 that features the Archivist with items for the capsule on the cover. The capsule was buried under a marker bench in Drexel park in 2010.

Valdosta State College Woman's Club

Scope and Contents Valdosta State College Woman's Club was founded in 1967. The stated purpose of the club was: to foster social life amongst its members, to promote the welfare of the student body, and to further the interests of the college in every way possible." The collection spans from 1970-1982 and contains  yearly Calendars , membership lists, a "yearbook", and a Cookbook. This collection contains items from events that were held at Valdosta State University. There is a wide range of genres represented from the history of Valdosta State, to visiting artists and exhbits. Included are the materials of exhibits such as the House in the Woods, Valdosta State's 100 year anniversary, and the history of integration at Valdosta State. Valdosta also had Maya Angelou, Jancie Daugharty, and the We the People exhibit as well as hosting theater conferences.

Valdosta State University Centennial

Scope and Contents South Georgia State Normal College was founded in 1906 as a teacher's college. It became a four year institution in 1922 and was rebranded Georgia State Woman's College, a name that it kept until it became co-educational in 1950  transforming into Valdosta State College. In 1993 Valdosta State achieved Univesity status, and in 2006 it celebrated it's hundredth year anniversary. This collection contains materials published by Valdosta State College. The first box contains picture booklets published by the college "reflecting" on past years, from the 1930s, 1966, and 1970.The items from the second box are mostly informational/promotional flyers, pamphlets, and brochures from the 1970s and 1980s. These items are mostly meant to be informative about the services available at Valdosta State.

VSU Mace

Correspondence exchanged concerning acquiring a Mace for Valdosta State College. Fluker Stewart had been attempting to get one since 1969. The mace referred to in this correspondence is in Archives Storage, while the current mace is in the President's office.

Whitehead Camellia Trail

Scope and Contents The Whitehead Camellia Trail was donated as a Christmas gift in 1944 to Georgia State Womans College. Mrs. Jewel Whitehead donated 150 camellia plants to the college, and took the time and effort to plant them on the north end of the main campus amongst some pine trees. She continuously worked on the trail throughout the rest of her life, adding new flowers and keeping up the old ones.
