Historic records donated to museum Fred Groover recently donated three bound copies of old Grooverville Store ledgers (circa 1850’s), Liberty Baptist Minutes (1842-1960), Liberty Baptist Registrar (1843-1988) and the Methodist Conference (1856-1870) to the Brooks County Museum and Cultural Center. “I felt these records needed to be preserved, so I had them copied and bound to be placed in the museum,” said Groover. Groover’s family was one of the early settlers in the community of Grooverville near Dixie. He is now a resident of Jacksonville, Florida. - ca-009-003-001-047g.jpg: Drawing of Hotel Marie, Quitman, Georgia. No date (ca. 1890-1925). Hotel Marie - In 1889 Quitman leaders realized the need for hotel facilities here. F.J. Spain and Henry G. Turner were leaders in a drive to raise funds for construction and $13,000 was collected in a short time. The Quitman Hotel Company was organized and the Purcell lot on Screven Street was purchased for $1,800. A pretentious and unusually large 3-story structure with verandas extending around the building. A.H. Johnston was the architect and S.A. Remington was the contractor of the 46-room hotel. The hotel company named it Hotel Marie in honor of F.J. Spains young daughter. The Hotel Quitman is now located on the Hotel Marie site. - ca-009-003-001-049.jpg: A.B. Jones Groceries, Coal, and Building Materials. Quitman, Georgia, no date (early 20th century). A.B. Jones sold general merchandise, brick, gravel, sand as well as coal from this location in the 700 block of East Johnson St., directly across from the South Georgia RR Depot. He had a special siding for unloading his materials into his warehouse. Coal was shipped by ACL RR and unloaded from a special car made to open from the bottom to dump the coal beneath the trestle. This picture was made in the early 1900s.
