Scope and Contents

This binder (Binder 3) comprises ca. 1874–2013 material assembled in 2013 by the Brooks County Museum and Cultural Center and consists of approximately 70 items in various formats—original and reproduced black-and-white and color photographs, postcards, newspaper clippings, printed advertisements, and promotional brochures—documenting the commercial and civic architecture of Quitman, Brooks County, Georgia. Including early views of the Brooks County Jail (est. 1884) with modernization reports; images of the Quitman Post Office and City Hall (c. 1908–1916) and their groundbreaking; street scenes of Lee and Screven Streets showing storefronts, stables, and early automobiles; interior and exterior views of the Quitman Free Press (1904–1950s); storefront and promotional materials for local enterprises such as Cook Patrick Furniture, W.B. Dunn Company, Hogan’s Jewelry Store, Avera/Maddox Drug Stores, and Mitchell’s rolling‐store trucks; and select brochures for the Ilex Theater, West End Café, and the former Opera House/Police Department building.

  • ca009-004-002_p009: Brooks County Historical Society Building, Quitman, Georgia. No date. This small Greek Revival cottage at 106 West Screven Street was built circa 1860 and served as Dr. D. I. Ricks’s dental office, later the American Red Cross office during WWI, and then the law office of S. S. Bennet and Son. Acquired by the Brooks County Historical Society in 1979.

Two-story brick structure that served as headquarters and primary warehouse for Quitman’s largest incorporated business, founded in 1903 and in use until 1997.
