Scope and Contents

The Family of Francis Marion Shaw, Volume 7 Number 2, July 1998. From the Berrien County Historical Foundation Collection at Valdosta State University Archives and Special Collections.

This newsletter profiles Lacy Lester Shaw, the fifth child of Francis Marion and Rachel Allen Shaw, detailing a life characterized by a close bond with his younger brother Chester, fluctuating financial success, and persistent political aspirations. Initially a farmer, Lacy's wealth significantly grew through his partnership with Chester in successful ventures like the turpentining (naval stores) business and property investments. However, Chester's sudden death in 1912 due to a tragic accident profoundly impacted Lacy, leading to a decline in his resources despite his efforts to maintain their prosperous lifestyle and fulfill his painful obligation as administrator of Chester's estate. Lacy also pursued a political career, repeatedly running for County Tax Collector and notably losing a 1914 election by just four votes, followed by another narrow defeat in 1920. Despite his continued endeavors in various businesses like hardware and groceries, his later years saw a decline in fortune, culminating in his death in 1944 as the last surviving child of his parents, having spent much of his life trying to recapture the success he shared with Chester.
