Old Berrien Newsletter, Volume 5, Number 1 (Spring 2023): “Taming Blind Tigers”, Winter 2023
Description
This issue examines the history of “Blind Tigers” in Berrien County—local terms for individuals or locations engaged in the illegal sale of liquor during the early twentieth century. Drawing on The Nashville Herald, The Tifton Gazette, and other contemporary newspapers from the 1900s–1930s, the article traces how “Blind Tigers” operated through hidden wall openings or deceptive admission schemes that allowed alcohol to be “given away” during prohibition. The newsletter recounts major raids, shootings, and court cases; highlights the role of sheriffs and town marshals in enforcing local and statewide prohibition laws; and describes the growth of moonshine activity following Georgia’s 1907 statewide prohibition act. The issue also covers notable events such as the killing of Marshal A.W. Hyers in 1902, the 1909 gun battle at Bowden’s mill, and later moonshine prosecutions after national prohibition. A section on “blanket juice” explains how farmers fermented cane-syrup skimmings into a potent illicit drink. The newsletter concludes with the repeal of prohibition, the persistence of blue laws, and the enduring folklore surrounding “Blind Tigers” in Berrien County.
