Whitehead Camellia Trail

Scope and Contents
The Whitehead Camellia Trail was donated as a Christmas gift in 1944 to Georgia State Womans College. Mrs. Jewel Whitehead donated 150 camellia plants to the college, and took the time and effort to plant them on the north end of the main campus amongst some pine trees. She continuously worked on the trail throughout the rest of her life, adding new flowers and keeping up the old ones.

William Dean Mathes [1909-1969], of Morristown, Tennessee, served in World War II, in both the German and Pacific theaters. He served from 1944-1946, first in Germany and later in the Philippines after the German Surrender. He was a military policeman and a member of the Regimental Band. Before and after the worked as a book keeper and served at various times as a band director and choir director. He died in Nashville, Tennessee, where he had moved two years before, in 1969. The Lady Blazers Basketball Team was formed in 1974 (according to program information) , although intramural women’s basketball has been strong at VSC back to the 30’s during its days as GSWC. The first coach was Lyndal Worth. Charles Cooper, Jane Williamson, Yevette Sparks followed. The 1983-1984 team under Cooper won the Gulf South Conference, and reached the NCAA Division II Final Four.

Young Women's Christian Association

Yvonne Slate- George Washington Woolwork

Scope and Contents
A damaged large framed Woolwork of the Gilbert Stuart portrait of George Washington was gifted to Valdosta State University and Special Collections. After several years, chemisty student Ann K Williams and Deborah Davis did conservation work on the Woolwork. The mold stains were removed and the portrait reframed. It is now hanging in the stairwell of Ashley Hall.
