Scope and Contents
The diary was written in pocket-sized editions and each was sent home after it was completed. The collection in the Valdosta State Archives has two folders, each containing an identical copy of the McConnell diary. The diary is divided into five volumes, the last of which was written by John Albert Feaster Coleman after McConnell died. The Southern Patriot was a progressive southern newspaper that ran from from 1942-1976? out of South Carolina. The newspaper supported and advocated desegregation before and after the Civil Rights Movement. It covered groups like the militant-leaning Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) in a favorable light. It covered the youth movements, sit-ins, and acts of civil disobedience surrounding the Civil Rights Movement and inspired activists in their endeavors.The...

Abstract
William W. Knight was born around 1829 in what is today Berrien County, Ga. He married Mary E. Carroll in 1855 and they conceived a daughter, Lillian Melissa, on March 22, 1862.
Knight was the son of Levi Knight and Ann Clements/Herrin.
He enlisted in the army on October 1, 1861. Knight served in the 29th GA infantry in company K.
He was 6 feet in height, with dark hair and blue eyes.
He died December 27, 1863.
