This collection of papers was donated to the Valdosta State University Archives and Special Collections by Professor of History Dr. Catherine Oglesby. They mostly date from the late 1960s to the early 1970s. In 1989, Roy Copeland informed his wife, Cheryl, that he did not wish to select a gift for Christmas. Rather than doing this she decided to surprise him! For Christmas that year, she presented him with a seasonally wrapped box. Inside the box, to his surprise, was a set of autographed Muhammad Ali boxing gloves. Margaret (Sissy) Leonard and her family have a long tradition of jounalism and activism during the twentieth century. This tradition began with her grandfather, George Long, who relentlessly attacked the Ku Klux Klan in his editorials at the Macon Telegraph in the early 1900's. Her mother Margaret Long, a progressive journalist, worked at various southern newspapers while writing two published novels and raising two children (mostly alone) at a time when female journalists were a rarity....

The newspaper supported and advocated desegregation before and after the Civil Rights Movement.
