Scope and Contents The VSC Cross Country and Track Team was formed in 1976, although cross country runners had entered various events without the team previously.  George Whitmire, Gary Slayton, and Bill Thomas were early stars.  The first coach was Dave Waples.  That year the team won the State Championship, the South Atlantic Conference Championship, and placed eighth in the NCAA Nationals.
