Baseball

Scope and Contents The VSC Baseball Team was formed in 1954 and had its first official baseball season of intercollegiate competition in 1955.  The first coach was Walter Cottingham.  The college was first a member of the Georgia Conference.  In 1959, Gary Colson, later a VSC basketball coach, became baseball coach.  Bill (Billy) Grant became coach in 1960, and Tommy Thomas, the current baseball coach, became coach in 1968.  In 1974, VSC joined the South Atlantic Conference.  The team has won numerous...

Scope and Contents The VSC/VSU Football program began in 1982, and its first coach was Jim Goodman.  Other coaches include Mike Cavan, Hal Mumme, and  Mike Kelly.  The first athlete from the VSC football team to play professional football was Jesse Tuggle.  The team is division two of the Gulf South Conference.  President Hugh Bailey brought Football to VSC early in his tenure, and has been very active in supporting it. Men's Basketball

The men’s Basketball Team, first the Rebels and then the Blazers after 1972, was formed and played its first season in 1959 with coach Gary Colson (see Baseball 16/2/2).  In 1968, coach Jimmy Melvin took over and in 1971 James Dominey, current Blazer’s coach, got the job. The Men’s Basketball Collection contains, schedules, promotional materials, annual programs, clippings and correspondence.  The summer basketball camp is also documented.

Women's Basketball

Scope and Contents The Lady Blazers Basketball Team was formed in 1974 (according to program information) , although intramural women’s basketball has been strong at VSC back to the 30’s during its days as GSWC.  The first coach was Lyndal Worth.  Charles Cooper, Jane Williamson, Yevette Sparks followed.  The 1983-1984 team under Cooper won the Gulf South Conference, and reached the NCAA Division II Final Four.
