Scope and Contents
The William W. Knight Civil War Letters Collection consists of correspondence authored by William Washington Knight during his service in the Civil War. The letters are addressed to his wife and father, and provide personal insights into his experiences on the battlefield. The collection includes copies of the original letters, dating from 1861 to 1863, and contains 37 handwritten letters.

Biographical Note
William Washington Knight was born on March 4, 1829, in Lowndes County, which is today part of Berrien County, Georgia. He married Mary Elizabeth Carroll (1839-1906) in 1855, and they had three children: Mary Virginia Knight, born on 1855; Walter Howard Knight, born in 1859; and Lillian Melissa, born on March 22, 1862. Knight was the son of Levi Jonathan Knight (1803-1870) and Ann Donald Clements Knight (1802-1857). He enlisted in the Confederate Army on October 1, 1861, and served in the 29th Georgia Infantry Company K as a sergeant. Knight was 6 feet in height, with dark hair and blue eyes. He died at the age of 34 from disease on December 27, 1863, and was buried at Beaver Dam Cemetery, Ray City, Berrien County, Georgia.
