The Wiregrass Region Digital History Project (WRDHP) is a collaborative, volunteer-driven initiative dedicated to preserving the cultural and historical heritage of the Wiregrass Region, encompassing parts of South Georgia, North Florida, and Southeast Alabama.
The website serves as a digital repository and public history platform, featuring:
- Historic Structures Map: Utilizes Google My Maps to geolocate and contextualize at-risk or demolished historic sites.
- Oral Histories and Interviews: Captures community memory through conversations with local residents.
- Photographic and Videographic Documentation: Records regional landmarks and cultural practices.
- Research Articles and Abstracts: Includes deed record abstractions and historical analyses.
- Community Engagement Tools: Encourages local participation in documenting regional history.
The project emphasizes “history from the bottom up,” focusing on grassroots contributions and underrepresented narratives. It also provides updates on ongoing research, such as the abstraction of Lowndes County deed books and contributions to academic publications and podcasts.
