Irene Dodd Collection
Scope and Contents
Irene Dodd (1941- ) was a Professor of Art who served as department head from 1970-1980 at Valdosta State University and retired as Professor Emeritus of Art in 2002. Dodd began her art education in the studio of her father, esteemed regional artist Lamar Dodd and the founder and administrator of the art program at the University oif Georgia. Her works are part of collections at the High Museum, Atlanta, the University of Georgia and other Georgia museums in Lagrange, Macon, Marietta and Callaway Gardens. The Collection conisits of 21 art works assembled by Irene Dodd. The artwork is created by heself, her former professors at UGA, fellow VSU faculty, former VSU students and her mother. The works are in various mediums and sizes. This collection compliments the Lamar Dodd Collection at VSU. Artists include: Samuel Adler (1998-1979)- Visiting Professor at University of Georgia 1966-67, Professor of Art at NYU,studied at the Nationjal Academy of Design. Works in collections at the Metropolitan Museum and Whitney Museum , New york.; Corcoran in Washington D.C. Madeline Gekiere (1919-2014)- Visiting Professor of Art at University of Georgia 1966-67, Professor of Art, NYU, Zurich born painter, illustrator, film maker and fashion designer. Works in collections at Baltimore Museum, Brooklyn Museum, Dallas Museum, NY Public Library. Howard Thomas (1899-1971)-Professor of Art at the University of Georgia, University of Noth Carolina, and Agnes Scott, Traines at the Chicago Art Institute. J. Chris Wilson (1948- )- B.A. from Valdosta State Iniversity, MFA from the University of Georgia. Professor and artiist-in-residence at Barton College. Recognized nationally and internationally with over 200 works in collections around the world.
