Pannkoke Horse Collection

 Collection — Multiple Containers
Collection number: UA-22-44

Scope and Contents

In 1968 Dr. O.H. Pannkoke gave VSC over 2000 volumes and periodicals along with 15 carved horses.  These horses were originally displayed in the library at VSC, where they remain today.  This collection includes carvings by George Zier, considered to be one of the outstanding artists in this field in America.  Most of these beautifully finished pieces reveal the activity of the cowboy and horse in the Midwest during the early part of this country’s founding.  Also, there are carvings by other artists which represent aspects of the life of early American settlers. The collection includes a bucking bronco throwing its rider, a stallion fighting a mountain lion, a cutting horse and steer, three sets of fighting stallions, a covered wagon and team, and a cowboy roping a rearing stallion. Most of the collection is on display on the third floor of Odum Library.  Some other pieces are in the Archives Vault.
