History of Pinevale High School
Pinevale High School opened its doors on October 15, 1956, at 6:45 a.m., with Mr. C.C. Hall as Principal and Mr. Ernest Haile as Assistant Principal. The initial faculty included Edward Jones, Harvey L. Bannister, Clarence Lofton, Levy Taylor, Sara B. Jones, Georgia Stevens, Doris Scott, Delores Davis, Mildred M. Hunter, Mabel Brinson, and Carrie Lissimore. These educators were dedicated to their jobs and deeply concerned for their black students, knowing the students would demonstrate great abilities despite the limited resources available to them. They succeeded in turning out some of the best students the country could want as citizens.
The high school faced significant challenges in terms of equipment and textbooks, especially in comparison to other high schools in the area. Despite these difficulties, the school improved over time, growing both in faculty and student body. Pinevale High School became well-known from Atlanta to Miami and from Savannah to Tallahassee. The school's dedicated science teachers made up for the lack of laboratory equipment by vividly describing experiments on paper, making the students feel as if they were conducting the experiments themselves.
Over two-thirds of the faculty had earned master’s degrees, which contributed to the school's ability to produce numerous doctors, lawyers, and other professionals, including the first Black mayor of Valdosta. Pinevale High School's faculty and students worked together to overcome the challenges they faced, creating a legacy of excellence and achievement.
