Dr. Willie Houseal, a respected figure in civil rights, education, and historic preservation, shared his life journey during this Black History Month lecture. Born in Valdosta and a graduate of Pinevale High School, Dr. Houseal pursued higher education at several universities and dedicated 27 years to public education as a teacher, administrator, and principal.

In the 1980s, Dr. Houseal led efforts to change the unequal representation of the Black community in Valdosta's local government, resulting in a new district voting system and his election to the City Council in 1985. He played a crucial role in preserving the history of Southside Valdosta and contributed valuable materials to the BSU Archives.

Dr. Houseal emphasized the importance of listening, speaking out against injustice, and advocating for the greater good. His inspiring message, "If you want things to change, be the change," highlighted his enduring commitment to community empowerment and progress.
