10/2- VSU explores the diversity of mankind- Jeffery Clark; Article provides summary of Valdosta State University's third annual Multicultural Education Conference that was held on 9/25/1997. (page 11)

10/2- Georgia’s flag: does it speak for you?- Donna Delaney; Article discusses the Georgia state flag and its symbols that portray messages of hatred and division. Author advocates for petitioning representives to deman removal of Confederate battle emblems from the state flag.

10/4- Program hopes to ‘weed’ problems, ‘seed’ progress- Jodi M. Scott; Article discusses individuals and groups involved with the Weed and Seed program in Valdosta.

10/8- Residents discuss Weed and Seed plan- Jodi M. Scott; Rev Kelly Dawsey of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church advocated for the the cleanup of south Valdosta. Article discusses the planned action for the federal Weed and Seed program by the city of Valdosta, Project Change, the Souther District Attorney's office and the Middle District of Georgia United States Attorney's Office.

10/15- Farewell and Good luck to Gerald Guy- Charles Moore; Article discusses the exit of the former managing editor of The Valdosta Daily Times, Gerald Guy. Gerald Guy worked with Habitat for Humanity and Project Change. Gerald Guy was removed from his position as managing editor in July 1997.

10/16- Gerald Guy takes editor position in Wisconsin- Staff Reports; Former Valdosta Daily Times Editor left the paper to take a job as executive editor of The Manitowoc Herald-Times-Reporter in Manitowoc, Wisconsin.

10/20- Savannah-area schools slipping back into segregation, report states- Associated Press; Article discusses the segregation of the school systems after federal integration order was lifted in 1994. Article discusses prior methods of integration and the change in student demographics after an abscence of integration efforts.

10/22- Final area Weed and Seed meeting held- Jodi M. Scott; Article discusses proposed federal Weed and Seed Program, a community revitalization program.
