Scope and Contents
11/4- Crime lab done with inmate death: Review- no author; The toxicology report for Willie J. Williams Sr, an individual killed while in custody at Lowndes County Jail, was completed but not released. Preliminary results released by Coroner Charles Exum showed cause of death as "complications of blunt force head trauma".
11/9- Rose calls for a march on Dec. 5th: Says they are also researching a possible recall of Sheriff Paulk- Al Parsons; Rev. Floyd Rose called for a protest march on Dec 5, 1998. The protest was directed at Sherrif Ashley Paul on the basis of discrimination against black inmates and black guards. Article cites the death of Williams in custody of police.
11/9- A letter to the white folks about division- Aristotelis Santas, Ph.D., Valdosta; Article discusses the seldom told history of the seperation of black and white individuals from the colonization of America and the inception of slavery to modern day. Author identifies the lack of full historical knowledge as contributing to continued racism.
11/9- Third protest march planned: Protestors targeting Chamber of Commerce- Lowell Vickers Jr. ; Protesters plan to march on December 5. 1998 at the Valdosta-Lowndes County Chamber of Commerce to demand an inquest into an inmate's death
11/11- Weed and Seed kicks off clean-up- Suzanne Harris; Weed and Seed program kicked off three weeks of neighborhood cleanup. Volunteers made their sweep through the neighborhood target area from Hightower Street to Ashley Street
11/11- City Hires Information Officer- Suzanne Harris; The City of Valdosta hires Ron Gibson, an african american man, to fill the newly created public information officer position at city hall.
11/12- Show some proof- no author; Author shares opinion on Rev. Rose's calls for protests. They question the proof of Ashley Paulk's wrongdoing.
11/12- Just causing trouble- no author; Author shares opinion that they resent Floyd Rose's remarks on white people.
11/12- Boycott won’t help- no author; Author's opinion discusses Floyd Rose and a proposal to boycott white-owned business.
11/13- No racism here- no author; Author comments on Floyd Rose boycott of white business.
11/13- Won’t hurt holiday- no author; Author comments on GBI and FBI investigation and the calls for boycott by Rose.
11/13- Actions not Christian- no author; Author acknowledges the tragedy of the death of the prisoner but questions the character of Rev Rose.
11/16- College class teaches that slaves were happy- no author; Archdale, N.C. A nine week class at Randolph Community College taught by the local members of Sons of Confederate Veterans taught students pro-Confederate history that claimed that slaves were happy.
11/17- Parents should ‘grade’ child’s learning- Dr. Yvonne Fournier; Parent writes letter to Dr. Fournier about their eighth grade son. They claim their son does well in school, but when asked practical knowledge questions they are unable to answer. Parent argues that the parent should be the final assessment of their child's education.
11/17- GOP election setbacks renew questions of diversity- no author; Results of election bring questions about the diversity of voters and political candidates.
11/18- People’s Tribunal seeks more answers from commissioners: Rev. Rose says he will question hiring, promotion practices of the Lowndes Sheriff’s Department- Stacey Green; Rev Floyd Rose represented the People's Tribunal to discuss the death of Lowndes County inmate Willie James Williams Jr. and the treatment of black individuals in the hiring and promotion practices. Rose also planned to discuss the fact that ministers are listed by race when they visit the jail.
11/19- Education should be an adventure- Louis Schmier; Article discusses the curiosity of children and questions what is happening in the school enviornment to reduce their excitement of learning.
11/19- Lost SAT tests causing concerns for students: Kids at 12 schools in state of Georgia getting free retest- Associated Press; Kids at 12 schools in Georgia high schools receive frr SAT retests after test answer sheets were lost in the mail.
11/19- Not all is negative- no author ; Author encourages sharing the positive things about Rev Rose in addition to the negative.
11/19- Rose wants Paulk ousted: People’s Tribunal ask county leaders to seek his resignation- Stacey Green; Rev Floyd Rose urged Lowndes County commissioners to seek Sheriff Ashley Paulk's resignation. Rose suggested that if Paulk was black and Willie Williams had been white, they would have gotten rid of the sheriff. The Commissioners urged waiting until results from the investigation report were released.
11/20- Rev. Rose pleads not guilty to minor traffic ticket- Joe Dunlop; Rose pleaded not guilty to a traffic violation ticket that claimed that his headlights were not on.
11/20- City school chief questions state study: Sam Allen would prefer to dump middle school concept- Patricia H. Croll; State School Superintendent Linda Schrenko's office showed an increase in achievement after switching from a Jr. High School model to a middle school model.
11/23- Love one Another: Hundreds urged to look past race at special Sunday Service- Patricia H. Croll; More than 500 people gathered at Park Avenue Methodist Church for a Community Thanksgiving Service sponsored by the Valdosta Area Ministerial Association.
11/24- Indonesia’s Chinese minority seek safety from ethnic, religious riots- Associated Press; Chinese immigrants living in Indonesia seek safety after moms set fire to Christian/Protestant churches.
11/25- People’s Tribunal seeks to pool buying power- Lowell Vickers Jr. ; People's Tribunal unveiled an economic policy linking patronage of local business to employment of African Americans.
11/26- Williams inquest set for Wednesday- Shelby G. Spires and Joe Dunlop; Inquest into the death of Willie Williams Sr. to be held to discuss the facts surrounding the death.
11/27- Health gaps between blacks, whites persist: Public health experts say disparities exist even among middle class blacks-; Article discusses rates of death from diseases such as Heart disease, Stroke, AIDS, and Cancers. Data shows that black individuals are more than twice as likely to die of a stroke, 40 percent more likely to die of heart disease, and 35 percent more likely to die from cancer than white individuals.
