Scope and Contents

2/10- Black history month can bring us together: Author identifies Black History Month as an opportunity for people to understand the differences that divide them so that they can be united. Article highlights important contributions by gifted black people.

2/14- Black history vital to understanding U.S.- no author; Article discusses the relevance of black history month. Discusses gospel singer Mahalia Jackson and her ability to entertain mixed race crowds. Travelling for shows through the south, Jackson was unable to find places to eat or sleep due to the color of her skin.

2/15- Other opinions: Tallahassee Democrat- no author; Article ackowledges President Clinton's proposed $10 million effort to quantify racism in America through a research program as a good idea.

2/17- Commission says no to Tribunal review board request- Suzanne Harris; People's Tribunal spokesman James Wright requested that the medical treatment of suspects in the jail be reevaluated. He also called for the resignation of Sheriff Ashley Paulk. Wright asked for the formation of a ciizens review board and was turned down.

2/19- Murder defendant talked of racial killing as initiation- no author; Defendant John William King, one of the three white men to go on trial in the Jasper, TX dragging death of James Byrd Jr, previously talked about committing violence against black people as a a means of being accepted into a white supremacist gang. Article discusses Kings and Hoover's plans as Ku Klux Klan members.

2/22- Cold weather doesn’t stop ‘March for Unity’ in Adel- Laurel Hahlen; Article discusses unity march in Adel and Cook County. Residents feel that they deserve representation in government that matches the demographics of the county.

2/23- Charitable agencies adjust to Levi’s closing its doors- Lowell Vickers Jr. ; Levi Strauss & Co plant shut down in Valdosta. Levi's was a major employer for the community and a corporate sponsor for United Way of Lowndes County, Lowndes Associated Ministries to People, and The Boys & Girls Club of Valdosta Inc. Article states that Project Change, the anti-racism initiative created by Levi's is expected to be funded indefinitely.

2/24- Building a good self-esteem at an early age- Charles Moore; Article discusses combining reading and self esteem building, particularly with minority children. Article discusses a case of a teacher that read a book to her third-grade class about the hair of black children and then received death threats from parents.

2/28- Pioneering pilot remembers racism: Valdosta native flew in WWII- Joe Dunlop; The unresolved death of Willie Williams- no author; Article discusses retired U.S. Air Force Maj. Carrol S. Woods. Woods was one of the few African American soldiers to pilot a combat aircraft during World War II.

2/28- Scholar who fled draft seeks amnesty- Associated press; Article discusses Preston King, a black individual that pursued a master's degree at the London School of Economics and Political Science. In 1958, local draft board refused to extend his deferment to continue to pursue his education. King accused the board of racism and was convicted of failing to report in 1961. King fled the country and remained in England and became a political philosopher and author.
