Scope and Contents
5/11- Racial discrimination at law school- Nat Hentoff; Article tell the story of an individual that was rejected by the University of Washington Law School. The student believed that they were rejected because they identified themselves as white on the application.
5/19- Project Change awards- no author; Valdosta's Project Change held an award ceremony to recognize its volunteers.
5/20- Council to hear concerns over retention pond plans- Jodi M. Scott; Residents attend a meeting with Valdosta City Council to express concerns over the plans for a 13-acre retention pond. The pond would require the city to purchase 45 homes and relocate residents.
5/20- Former governor’s racial attitude being debated- Associated Press; A lawsuit before the 11th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals claimed legislators tried to keep black people out of office by requiring candidates to win elections with more than 50 percent of the vote. The election law was passed in 1964 by former GA Governor Carl Sanders who was identified as a racial moderate.
5/22- State law may allow teachers to bear arms- no author; Following a school shooting on May 21, 1998, the article discusses Georgia Legislator Mitch Kaye's plan to introduce a bill that would allow teachers to bear arms. The school shooting in reference is likely the 1998 Thurston High School shooting in Springfield, Oregon.
5/24- Rep. John Lewis recalls struggle civil rights- Associated Press; Article discusses congressman John Lewis's experience when he was arrested during the 1961 Freedom Rides in Jackson, Mississippi. Lewis wrote a book about his experience titled "Walking With The Wind: A Memoir of the Movement."
5/26- City’s project targets crime: Director hopes Weed and Seed improves safety- Jodi M. Scott; Valdosta was named a Weed and Seed. Article discusses the plan for crime prevention and community improvement.
