Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The Horne House Foundation Collection documents the charitable, educational, and community work of the Horne House Foundation for Human Betterment, established by Dr. R. Marie Horne in Quitman, Georgia. Spanning 1969 to 2024, this digital series brings together a wide array of newspaper clippings, columns, photographs, certificates, and organizational records that chronicle the Foundation’s impact on Brooks County and the surrounding region. The collection highlights Dr. Horne’s achievements as an African American physician and community leader, as well as the Foundation’s commitment to public health, youth mentoring, historic preservation, and the celebration of local heritage. Featured are Dr. Horne’s “Doc’s Special Messages” columns from The Quitman Free Press, which provide personal reflections, tributes to local leaders, public health guidance, and coverage of events honoring community figures and historic institutions. The series also includes materials recognizing the accomplishments of the Horne family, profiles of prominent African American professionals, collaborations with local organizations, and documentation of annual awards, mentoring initiatives, and charity events. Collectively, these materials offer a valuable record of the ongoing contributions of the Horne House Foundation and the broader Black community in Brooks County.
