Dr. Sidney Walter Martin was the fifth president of Valdosta State College. He served from 1966-1978 in which time he continued the building trend that had begun under Dr. Thaxton. During his presidency, Dr. Martin dedicated Odum Library, the Fine Arts Building, the Education Center, the College Union, and three dormitories: Langdale Hall, Lowndes Hall, and Georgia Hall. In 1960 the Georgia Assembly set up a committee on schools, ordered it to hold hearings throughout Georgia and find out how people felt about the future of their schools. The main topic was how Georgia should handle court ordered integration. The commission heard 1800 people (1600 whites and 200 Negroes[sic])and issued two separate reports. Snake Nation Press is a small publishing company based in Valdosta Ga. Founded by Roberta George, they published their first review in 1989, and except for a brief hiatus in '99, have released them yearly. Motivated to be active in the community and increase interest in literature, they host a writing group on Saturdays where local writers convene to critique their current works.
