History of the Department:    The Valdosta State Political Science Department is under the College of Arts and Sciences.  The first department head noted for the Modern Foreign Language Department was Dr. James Thornton, 1970-1972;  then Dr. Jose B. Fernandez served from 1972-198; Dr. Dennis Hale, 1981-1989 followed.  Dr. Sandra Walker has been head of Modern Foreign Languages since 1989.

Abstract This collection contains material from the 1950-1993 time period in Valdosta State University history.  During this time Valdosta State University was known as Valdosta State College. Renamed VSC from Georgia State Womens College in 1950, the school embarked on a new era as a co-ed campus. During the 1950?s the University expanded with the acquisition of the former Emory University campus at Valdosta in 1953, this became what is now known as North Campus. William W. Knight Collection

William W. Knight was born around 1829 in what is today Berrien County, Ga.  He married Mary E. Carroll in 1855 and they conceived a daughter, Lillian Melissa, on March 22, 1862.

Knight was the son of Levi Knight and Ann Clements/Herrin.

He enlisted in the army on October 1, 1861.  Knight served in the 29th GA infantry in company K.

He was 6 feet in height, with dark hair and blue eyes. 

He died December 27, 1863.
