Copeland African American Museum Collection

Scope and Contents In 1989, Roy Copeland informed his wife, Cheryl, that he did not wish to select a gift for Christmas. Rather than doing this she decided to surprise him! For Christmas that year, she presented him with a seasonally wrapped box. Inside the box, to his surprise, was a set of autographed Muhammad Ali boxing gloves. Costello/Whitten Collection

Folder contains a copy of their marriage license, the first issued to a same sex couple in Lowndes County after the Supreme Court ruling on June 26, 2015. Both are Valdosta State University Alumni and current employees of the university. The marriage officiant was Dr. Fred Downing, the Department Head for Philosophy and Religious Studies. Crockett Youmans Dance Studio Collection

Scope and Contents Marie Crockett Youmans ran a dance studio for many years in Valdosta.  In the early years of South Georgia State Normal College she was on the faculty as Marie Holt Greene.  This collection documents the history of her dance studio. Cross Country and Track Team History

Scope and Contents The VSC Cross Country and Track Team was formed in 1976, although cross country runners had entered various events without the team previously.  George Whitmire, Gary Slayton, and Bill Thomas were early stars.  The first coach was Dave Waples.  That year the team won the State Championship, the South Atlantic Conference Championship, and placed eighth in the NCAA Nationals. David Williams Oral History Collection

Scope and Contents The David Williams Collection consists of over 100 interviews with members of the Valdosta community and surrounding areas that lived during the Great Depression. The interviews chronicle the major difficulties of life during this trying era. Topics include descriptions of the struggle for daily provisions for the family. The collection contains DVDs, VHS tapes, and audio cassettes. All the tapes in the collection have been digitized and are available on DVD for use.
