Gulliver/Rentz Collection
Scope and Contents
Augusta Rentz Gulliver was an alumnus of Georgia State Womans College and went on to become its Registrar in 1931. This is where she met Harold Gulliver. Harold was the head of the English department and a professor of English literature at GSWC. They were married in the rotunda of West Hall in the early 1930s.
This collection is made up of items found in an old steamer trunk belonging to the Gullivers. It is full of correspondence, along with photographs and newspaper clippings. It spans from the 1880s to the 1980s and it paints a picture of what life was like for an academic couple during that time period. Also in the trunk are letters from Harold Gulliver's father Henry as he planned for his "Grand Tour" of Europe, and correspondence from Harold Gulliver Jr. who would become editor of the Atlanta Constitution.
Harold Gulliver was an alumnus of Yale University and a Fulbright Scholar. He was also a World War I veteran. Prior to the war he was the head of the English Department at Roberts College in Constantinople, Turkey. After his retirement from VSC, Gulliver spent a year teaching English Literature at Damascus University in Syria. The couple had two sons, Harold Jr. and William.
