Paul Leavy Photographic Collection
Scope and Contents
The collection documents the professional photographic work of Paul E. Leavy, primarily from his career with The Valdosta Daily Times before his 2012 appointment at Valdosta State University. Subjects include regional news, community events, businesses, schools and athletics, military activities, individuals, and assignments concerning university people, buildings, and events. A preliminary inventory identifies approximately 1,674 optical-disc entries and more than 9,000 photographic assignments. The collection also includes prints, slides, transparencies, and negatives. Counts and dates remain provisional because processing and media recovery are incomplete.

Biographical Note
Paul E. Leavy began his photography career in 1982 with Flash Professional Photography in Gainesville, Florida, where he specialized in group, candid, and portrait photography. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Journalism from the University of Florida in 1985, specializing in photojournalism with a minor in visual arts. That year, he joined the staff of The Valdosta Daily Times, where he worked as a news photographer for more than 25 years.
Leavy left The Valdosta Daily Times on August 1, 2012, to become University Photographer at Valdosta State University within Creative Design Services. In that role, he photographed university events, people, buildings, and activities for publications, marketing, publicity, and online communications. As of 2026, the university lists Leavy as Photographer within the Communications unit of University Marketing and Communications.

Overview
Photographs created and accumulated by photographer Paul Leavy, including newspaper, commercial, community, school athletics, military, and Valdosta State University assignments. Arrangement
The collection is arranged in five series according to the predominant media contained in the original binders: optical media, photographic prints, slides, mixed photographic media, and negatives. Original binder order and locally assigned binder identifiers have been retained.
Physical Characteristics and Technical Requirements
Original optical media require specialized hardware and preservation processing. Researchers do not receive direct access to the original discs. Digital content is made available only after successful recovery, preservation review, and any necessary restrictions assessment.
Processing Information
The collection is partially processed. Staff retained the original binder sequence and assigned stable identifiers to binders, disc positions, and identified photographic assignments. Optical media have not been fully imaged or quality controlled. Titles in brackets were supplied by archival staff.
