Scope and Contents

3/1- Black lawmakers gaining ground: Many see themselves becoming ‘equal players’- Associated Press; Article discusses the interest shift of black legislators from issues such affirmative action and welfare reform to key issues such as education, health care, economic development, and transportation. Article discusses the increase in black representation in government decision making. Highlights Senate Mahority Leader Charles Walker, who at the time held the highest post a black lawmaker has held in Georgia. Also highlights Attorney General Thurbert Baker and Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond, the first black individuals elected to statewide office.

3/8- Cook resident recalls battle against racism- Laurel Hahlen; Article provides insight into the racism expereienced by Bob Jones and his fight for civil rights. Jones participated in civil rights marches starting in 1962. He marched with Ralph Abernathy, Al Sharpton, and Jesse Jackson.

3/18- Only racism will kill King’s dream- Kevin S. Cronin, Valdosta ; Article responds to a March 4 letter from Janice Hines. Author calls out the ignorance and bigotry from the letter and provides examples of white individuals that have stood up for civil rights.

3/26- Cal Thomas’ column misleading, inaccurate- James R. Wright, Valdosta; Article responds to an opinion published by columnist Cal Thomas. Author claims that Thomas wrote false and misleading statements about the NAACP, W.E.B. DuBois and Booker T. Washington. Author discusses the role of the NAACP and the work of Booker T. Washington

3/30- Whites leave welfare faster than minorities- Associated Press; Article questions whether welfare systems are leaving minorities behind. Findings point to racial disparities in employment and considers the housing , schools, crime, and the location that people live.

3/31- The Right to Vote is inked in Blood- Charles Moore; Article discusses Bloody Sunday and the fight to be able to vote. Article encourages people to vote lest the deaths of those that fought for the right to vote be in vain.
