Margaret (Sissy) Leonard and her family have a strong legacy in journalism and activism throughout the 20th century. The tradition started with her grandfather, George Long, who courageously criticized the Ku Klux Klan in his editorials for the Macon Telegraph in the early 1900s. Abstract
This collection was found in a wall when a construction worker was tearing some down. He donated the materials to Valdosta State University's Archives. The collection contains African American Newspapers from the 1950s and 60s. Included in these papers are the Newark, NJ Telegram and The Pittsburg Courier: Georgia Edition and one copy of the Georgia-Florida Times. The majority of items come from the late 50s (1958).

Martha Owens and Susan B. Rockett helped found the Every Child A Winner (E.C.A.W) program, under the Title III Project HOPE ( Health and Optimum Physical Education) during the late 60s early 70s. They made use of the National Diffusion Network to introduce their programs to schools across the nation. Their system was part of the largest federally funded grant program in physical education at the time period, and was representative of an integrated physical education system.

May Day was a tradition that had been on campus since the school's inception in 1913. It lasted until the 1956, ending after Georgia State Womans College became Co-ed. There was a break in the mid-1940's caused by wartime austerity. Modeled after the Old English May Day festival, every year featured a different theme, and a new May Queen and Court.
