May Day Festival

Scope and Contents May Day was a tradition that had been on campus since the school's inception in 1913. It lasted until the 1956, ending after Georgia State Womans College became Co-ed. There was a break in the mid-1940's caused by wartime austerity.  Modeled after the Old English May Day festival, every year featured a different theme, and a new May Queen and Court. McGinley and Odum Theatre Collection

Scope and Contents This is a combined collection of play materials collected by Lily McGinley and Gertrude Odum. Gertrude Odum (1999-1988) was a professor of English at GSWC and VSC from 1921-1965. The McGinley materials span from 1898 to 1936 and include playbills and programs from productions such as Peter Pan and the Little Minister staring Maud Adams.  The Odum Collection includes items from the 1930's to 1960.  Odum attended plays in New York annually and wrote local reviews of those plays.  This...

McLeod and Mauldin Day Book and Ledger

The first McLeod and Mauldin Daybook ranges from 1839-1840 and was from Snatchville in Lowndes County Georgia. The other ledger is from 1843-1845. M.E. Thompson Papers

Scope and Contents Melvin Thompson, the first person elected to the office of lieutenant governor of Georgia, served as the state's governor in 1947-48. He is best remembered for his fight with Herman Talmadge over the governorship after the death of Governor-elect Eugene Talmadge in 1946. The papers of M.E. Men's Basketball

Scope and Contents

The men’s Basketball Team, first the Rebels and then the Blazers after 1972, was formed and played its first season in 1959 with coach Gary Colson (see Baseball 16/2/2).  In 1968, coach Jimmy Melvin took over and in 1971 James Dominey, current Blazer’s coach, got the job. The Men’s Basketball Collection contains, schedules, promotional materials, annual programs, clippings and correspondence.  The summer basketball camp is also documented.

History of the Department:    The Valdosta State Political Science Department is under the College of Arts and Sciences.  The first department head noted for the Modern Foreign Language Department was Dr. James Thornton, 1970-1972;  then Dr. Jose B.
